Hyatt Regency Buffalo loses affiliation with Hyatt chain

The Hyatt Regency Buffalo, temporarily closed since April 1 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, will no longer be affiliated with the Hyatt chain as of June 1 – but it is not yet clear if it will close permanently.

Hyatt Hotels Corp. confirmed late Tuesday that it is terminating its affiliation with one of Buffalo's most prominent downtown hotels, which will no longer carry the Hyatt flag after more than 36 years of operation.

"At this time, we do not know whether the hotel will continue to operate after Hyatt's termination date," said a spokesman for the Chicago-based hotel company – which licenses its brand but does not own the hotel.

The 396-room hotel at Fountain Plaza – the city's second largest after the Buffalo Grand Hotel – has been owned and run from its onset by Snyder Corp., whose CEO, Paul Snyder, could not be reached for comment Tuesday about any future plans.

"Unfortunately, as Hyatt will no longer be operating the hotel, we've been forced to make the extremely difficult decision to implement layoffs across our hotel workforce," the Hyatt spokesman said.
